In March 2003 Brazil was my first stop on a round the world trip. It was my first visit to this country and thanks to the warm friendship and hospitality of Marly Winkler, the International Vegetarian Union Regional Secretary for Latin America and the Carribean, it was a most enjoyable and memorable visit. I met many vegetarians/vegans and gave a talk “Vegetarianism and Christianity” at the first public meeting of the newly formed Brazilian Vegetarian Society* - a great honour. Most of my time was spent near Florianópolis on the island of Santa Catarina where I stayed in Marly’s home in Cacupé. I spent one day in São Paulo and I am very grateful to Mirian Costa for meeting me, entertaining me in her home and showing me around.

Florianópolis was the venue for the IVU Congress, in November 2004.
